The Company

Our client is market leader in delivering electrical solutions across New Zealand from design through to delivery.

Due to continued growth, they are looking for an experienced Senior Protection Engineer to join their Auckland Team.

The Role

A key part of the role will be providing specialised technical plans, standards, and guidance for the development, maintenance, and operation of our client’s electrical protection and control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide design expertise on new build and brown-field substations and distribution projects, technology innovations, and solution studies.
  • Develop detailed designs for electrical protection and control schemes.
  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies, undertake fault investigations, and offer engineering support to other business teams.
  • Lead and review designs, develop, and support our client’s protection, automation, and communications systems.
  • Maintain high quality technical specifications and standards.
  • Drive improvements in business processes, network operation, equipment functionality, and safety
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards and templates.
  • Contribute to project planning and processes.
  • Conduct investigations and propose effective solutions.
  • Coordinate team activities, mentor, and provide training.
  • Offer technical support for operational challenges.
  • Oversee and participate in the commissioning of systems.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety protocols.
  • Engage in industry consultations and deliver technical training.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources, materials, and labour.

Skills and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Minimum 5+ years' experience in protection design and analysis for electrical distribution or transmission networks.
  • Advanced analytical, investigation and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of distribution network planning and standards.
  • Hands-on experience in power system analysis.
  • Experience in developing and delivering technical training.
  • Experience in network communications technology, including IEC 61850 and DNP3
